Students
UCSC students with valid ID cards can use them to access the following services and spaces (see here to find out how to pick up a quarterly validation sticker):
- Santa Cruz County Metro Bus Pass – Show the Metro Bus driver your ID card with a valid quarter sticker to ride for free! There is usually a grace period at the beginning of the quarter for riders who have not updated their validation stickers, but get your sticker to make sure.
- Campus Housing Access – If you are living in Campus Housing, your ID card is often used for building, room, and bathroom access, as well as allowing access to other areas in your Campus Housing facilities.
- Recreation Facilities Pass – To access any of UCSC’s recreation facilities (i.e., the East Field House), show your ID card with a valid quarter sticker. If you have problems using your ID card at the recreation facilities, check with the Recreation and Athletics administration office, located on the second floor of the East Field House.
- Library Card – Student use of the Libraries requires a student ID number. The UPC code on the front of your ID card (that includes your SID) is your check out number for both Science and McHenry Libraries.
- Dining Services Access – Your ID card can be used as a payment card at UCSC Dining-operated locations if you have a Slug Points meal plan or UCSC Dining funds (Banana Bucks or Flexi Dollars). More information is available on the Dining website.
- Academic/Other Space Access – If you work in a lab, are a course TA, or have other reasons to enter a locked space on campus, you need to speak with the facilities person (or the department) who controls the space to gain access. Once your ID card is programmed into their system, you will have the access they allow. Card access to some spaces on campus are managed in your ID card account; you can put in an ITS ticket using “Get Help” to request that access.
Staff/Faculty/Others
How you use your card will depend on your status on campus.
- Library Card (Staff/Faculty) – Staff and Faculty use of the Libraries requires an employee ID number. The UPC code on the front of your ID card (that includes your EID) is your check out number for both Science and McHenry Libraries.
- Academic/Other Space Access (All) – If your work, research, teaching, or other activities require entry to spaces with card-activated locks you need to speak with the facilities person (or the department) who controls the space to gain access. Once your ID card is programmed into their system, you will have the access they allow. Card access to some spaces on campus are managed in your card account; you can put in an ITS ticket using “Get Help” to request that access.
